Surviving Without Corkscrews
Although we are all accustomed to corkscrews not many people seem to know where they come from nor who invented them. Until the 18th century wine was traditionally stored in amphoras before wooden barrels were introduced. Advances in the glass technology allowed the production of glasses with long and relatively thin bottlenecks.
It seems that the first patent for a corkscrew dates back to the beginning of the 18th century and was registered to an Englishman. After that, many many more followed each one presenting something different either in the design or in the way it was functioning. The commonly known single lever corkscrew dates back in the 19th century.
The great variety of corkscrews offered in the shops and on the internet. They are not just a practical device but can be a creative piece of art, sold for some considerably high amount of money. For example, the world's most expensive one was sold for about £50,000 and it was a combination of a common Swiss Army knife with some sort of ring puzzles. The cost has been considerably increased by the 18 carat gold coating. All the other parts are made out of aviation titanuim.
Although most people think it's one of the most useful wine accessories, others seem to make it without it! Most of us must have been in a situation where the corkscrew cannot be found anywhere and that great bottle of French red wine cannot be opened. Some of the most common ones include a screw and a pair of pliers or the push method where you have to push the cork in the bottle with the aid of a knife or screwdriver. The least recommended method is the one where pressure can be built by hitting the bottom of the bottle against a hard object. In the end, the cork will eventually come out if the bottle hasn't broken in the meantine.
Why don't men talk about what bothers them, but keep it bottled inside?
Unlike women who talk about it, and it makes them feel better.
Men don't like to feel like they need help from anybody else. It's a point of male pride - being able to do things on your own. It's the exact same reason a lot of men won't stop and ask for directions or call the plumber or other handymen. But just like getting lost physically when they're too stubborn to ask for help, they can get lost emotionally as well. But the more pry and try to help, the worse they can end up feeling. You really have to let them open up to you.
VinOair Wine Aerator Premier Gift Set (woot)
**Bubble Bubble Flavor’s Doubled**
In those old, carefree childhood days, everything got aerated.
Boy, just having a straw was fun all by itself, wasn’t it? You could chew on
it, or blow the wrapper across the table, or have a magic wand or a tiny
sword… but if you could put it in _liquid_? Awwww, yeah, that was the stuff. A
few short breaths and you were making bubbles in everything from soda to water
to milkshakes and back again… at least until some grown up made you stop.
Over time, you lost that gentle joy of adding air to everything. And then, you
moved to a drink that’s never meant for a straw. You moved to _wine_. But now
you’re being told that the best flavor comes for aerating? What the freaking
heck, people? We all just unlearned that as part of growing up!
Anyway, the VinOair Wine Aerator Premier Gift Set lets you add that air back
into your wine in a way that’s far less fun, but certainly seems more
appropriate in polite company. The VinOair works as an aerator to make sure
your wine unlocks every subtle flavor hidden inside… ...
