Dogs In Denver
Even with a portrait of one of their recent graduates displayed on one of the walls of the non profit school, the teachers at the guide dogs school for the blind commented on how there was no air of favoritism in their line of work. The portrait is of Jeannie, a gentle, brown eyed golden retriever, who has been serving as the eyes of a blind Denver, Colorado lady. It has already been a few years since the artist of this picture lost her own eyesight. When she lost her eyesight, if it were not for painting then this artist said that she has no idea what might have happened. In most occasions, you will find her painting the Indian life in Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona when her eyesight was still okay. How about now? She says that for days, even weeks before picking up the brush, she thinks. When she paints, the images do not originate from her eyes but instead from her head. She does not create outlines on her canvasses anymore considering how the pins that she used damaged the surface. When she paints, she no longer has to make use of these things.
When she painted Jeannie, she began by making a line drawing with a crayon. With her left forefinger she followed the slightly raised line to guide the paint brush held in her right hand. When Jeannie was painted, the artist had already lost her sense of sight and so how was she able to paint her?
Actually, the lady that Jeannie was given to was this artist and the instructor at the school described how Jeannie looked when she was transferred to her care. Close to the color of the setting sun, the instructor told her that Jeannie was golden with a hint of bronze. It is much easier for her to use three colors at a time when she paints and her sense of smell helps her differentiate the pigments. More expert paintings information is located at horse portraits.
A small brush was used when she painted Jeannie, except for the part with the tail, she used her finger to paint it so that it will have that proud and fluffy appearance. When questioned about how it feels like not being able to see what she paints, all that she said was she has this innate feeling telling her that they are good. Even Jeannie gave her the stamp of approval when she revealed her portrait.
There was no doubt in her mind that she did good. Life can still be useful even with a disability according to the guide dogs school for the blind. More than 87 per cent of the school's alumni are gainfully employed at jobs that range from newspaper delivery to hair styling. It takes $1700 per man and dog team when it comes to the training expense but in light of the fact that this school is a volunteer powered organization, no money comes from the students.
