Realistic Tips Maintaining Cast Iron Teapots
Apart from the usual amount of care that we take of our home utensils, cast iron teapots will take up your attention to ensure that you do not get an overdose of iron from the rust.
Do not remove the residue that is left in the teapot
Whenever we use cast iron teapots to brew tea, a thin coat of residue is deposited on the surface of the metal. The principal component of this residue are tannin compounds of the various substances that are found in tea. Tannin, you will discover, is the major component of many anti-rust compounds because it converts iron oxide into iron tannate. This is a non-reactive and therefore harmless black-blue precipitate that adheres to the walls of cast iron teapots. The opinion of some people that the residue in these teapots should be removed should not be heeded in this regard. Tannin disables the rusted component of the teapot and the more you use cast iron teapots, the more tanning you deposit along its inner walls and the more anti-rust ingredients you have.
People in the past were certainly content to leave the residue where it was. They simply rinsed the tea vessel after use and allowed it to dry completely in the sun before keeping it.
Don’t let water or tea stand in the pot for a long time
Cast iron teapots won’t take kindly to being left unattended after you are done with them. They are likely to get more rusty after that. So when you are done with using them, you should pour out the remaining liquid, rinse the teapot, invert it so it can drip dry and dry it with a warm air blower. Never use detergents or dish-washing preparations as their odor may stick to the walls of the cast iron teapots and spoil your tea for a long time. This is especially true if any oil has been used in those preparations, making it likely that they produce oily residues on the teapot which will become precipitated and permanently attached to the wall the next time you brew your tea.
Olive oil and salt with a fine grain is used to treat rust on the outside
Olive oil and finely grained salt may be mixed to create a rubbing solution for the treatment of external rust on cast iron teapots. The solution has to be bently rubbed on to the affected area so that its finish may not be scratched visibly.
Or you could just purchase cast iron teapots that have been glazed with porcelain
You won’t have to worry about rust-prevention at all if you go on and purchase those cast iron teapots that have been coated with a layer of porcelain. The porcelain works by preventing the metal from rusting and well as by preventing any rust from contaminating your tea. Remember that rust(iron), in high quantities can be toxic. Residue will still cling to the porcelain surface, providing you with an additional layer of anti-rust protection.
