Chinese Festivals And The Chinese Calendar
Long ago the lunar and solar cycles of the Earth were merged into a Chinese calendar developed by the Chinese people. With both a separate solar and lunar calendar in earlier times these were merged to be incorporated into one which has since been used by many Asian cultures.
Each year begins in February and ends in the next year again in February. Each year begins new, with the year of a particular zodiac animal such as 2010 is the Year of the Tiger, each following year is represented by something else which is new.
There are nine animals, one dragon, one snake and a rooster which represents twelve in all. The animals included on this are a rat, an ox, a tiger, a rabbit, the horse, a sheep or this can be a goat, the monkey, the dog and a pig or this can also be a boar. There is a legend which explains why these are the ones that have been chosen.
The legend or a shortened version of it goes like this, on this calendar one object was to begin it but because they could not decide and all wanted to be first the gods intervened. It was decided that there should be a race from one side of a river to the other and the object who got there first would be the winner and would be first on the calendar. The rat was the smartest and won with the pig arriving last because it was considered lazy.
This time reckoner has been used by many farmers for planting and harvesting of their crops. The working system of this has to do with the patterns of the solstices and the equinoxes and different phases of the moons cycle. Spaced fifteen degrees apart there are twenty four points which are set along the path of the sun while adjustments are made to keep the time calculation aligned. Shortly after the start of each year the Chinese New Year begins around February on a new moon cycle.
In the West at the solstice and equinox a season begins, on the one of the Chinese it begins in the centre of these. The twenty four points also represent a seasonal condition such as the one at sixty degrees meaning grain full, or the grains are plump and the one at 195 degrees is cold dew, or dew turns to frost.
A year consists of the lunar cycle of 354 days which has to be corrected with an intercalary month added now and then to keep it the same as the 365 day system. Nine festivals with two special holiday calculated into this are celebrated under this system. The Chinese time reckoner goes by a lunar cycle whereas the Western one goes by the solar cycle.

cool Lex, i love the Pigs lol! ![]()
seriously pigs are amazing people.
I like rats, they're cool. Sheeps are nice but they hardly understand the dragon lol
I don't think I like the idea of being called a pig, something just doesn't sound right about it..
but I generally like those born under that sign...
I also like Goats, Dragons, Dogs & Tigers...
