Hot To Carve A Car
The Pinewood Derby is a long standing Boy Scout tradition that is held every year. The derby is an event where boys take solid blocks of pine wood and carve them into cars and race them.
The Pinewood Derby was created in 1953 by Cubmaster Don Murphy from Pack 280c in Manhattan Beach. When Murphy's son was disappointed he was to young to race in the Soap Box derby, Murphy recommened he make little wooden cars to race in it's place. The first event was a success and soon the event began to spread. At used car sales you will be sure to find a deal you will love.
Living up to its name, the scout is given a solid block of pine wood, 4 wheels and 4 nails for axles and told to make a car. The only rules to follow were that all pieces must be used, the car had to weigh no more then 5 oz. and it had to fit on the track, all of the rest was on the scout.
The idea is for the scout and a loved one, usually father or grandfather, to spend time with the scout creating the car. ANy tool can be used to shape the car including whittling knives, shaping tools and even jig saws. The nails act as axles and are hammered in through the hub of the wheels. Making the car is really an art form but there are some very important scientific principles to remember. First of all is the design. A car built for speed is sleek and aerodynamic. Endless sanding and polishing go into the body to make sure that there is as little wind resistance as possible.
Another factor is weight. Most rules have a limit of 5 ounces, but the car should get as close to this as possible. However there is more. Grooves and holes are carved out to add weight. Lead fishing weights are melted and poured into the groove to make it heavier. It is a heavily debated process, as some insist weight should go in the very front, some in the middle, some on top or on bottom. Each person has their own opinion. The wheels are another major point of concern. The wheels need to be on tight but not too tight as to prevent turning. On the opposite side they need to be loose enough to spin, but not wobbly. Additionally, it is important to polish the axles and lubricant to make sure they spin correctly. The tires also need to have some polish as well to make them slicker, but not too slick, because they need to grip the tracks. Sanding the edges of the tires down is another common technique, but it as opened to debate as the weights can be.
Paints schemes are completely up to you. Many are painted like race cars, others are futuristic while some are simple. A few you may have no idea what they are. Of course, this is just all to win the race. We haven't even touched on the other catagories like best in show and most original design.
