Allow The Globe As Your Gift: How Passports For Minors Make It Happen
Traveling abroad is one of the greatest things that can happen to a child. Going to other countries gives them a broader perspective of the world and makes them better persons. It gives them a bigger understanding of how things work. There is one requirement that everyone, including children, must possess before they are able to set foot on another country. That requirement is the passport. Getting U S passports for minors is actually easy provided you prepare early and have all the documents.
Everyone is free to get a passport. There is a form called Application for a US Passport or Form DS-11 that is freely available and can be downloaded from the Internet, even if applying for a replacement United States passport. When it is time to submit the filled-up form, everyone, infants, minors and adults must be physically present in the passport acceptance center for processing. A parent or a guardian must accompany minors below 16 years of age. Minors 16 or 17 years old may appear unaccompanied at acceptance centers only if they have proof that show parental permission allowing them to travel abroad.
The most important document that will be asked for other than the applicant when he submits his filled-up form is a certified copy of his birth certificate. The full names of the parents of the child must be indicated together with the full name of the child, place of birth, and date of birth. A seal of the agency where the copy of the passport was acquired should be present.
There are other documents that are required for passport processing. Some of them are proofs of identification for the parents. Such proof may include a driver's license, original passport of the parent and other IDs issued by the government. Finally, you will be asked to pay for processing, which means that if you have reached this point, you have completed all the documentary requirements.
It takes four to six weeks to process a passport. Because of this long wait, everyone is encouraged to apply for a passport early. When you and your children need to travel right away, the passport application can be processed faster if the expedited passport processing option is availed. There is an additional processing charge for expedited processing. If you want to avoid the rush, simple apply for a passport for your kids early.
If you have no immediate plans for traveling, it is still a good idea to get a certified copy of your kids' birth certificate. This document is very important for their welfare and is also a required document in many situations. If you notice a mistake or something missing in the document, have them corrected at once.
When we allow our kids to travel, they understand why the world is the way it is. As Americans, we know that we are fortunate to grow up in a country that is free from wars, extreme poverty and religious persecution. There is no better way for our kids to know this than by travelling to other countries.
International travel is one of the best gifts to give to your children. The sights of foreign lands, languages they will hardly understand, food and culture are all waiting for them. If you prepare for this early, getting United States passports for minors should at most be a half-day of waiting for a personal appearance at the processing center. There is certainly nothing difficult about that, especially if applying for a replacement USA Passport.
